Binary arithmetic is the same arithmetic
Adding in binary works exactly as in decimal — you just carry at 2 instead of 10. 1011 + 110 is 11 + 6 = 17, or 10001. Multiplication reduces to shifting and adding, which is precisely how hardware does it.
